If tongues are indeed for everyone, as these scriptures reveal, then why is tongues surrounded by such confusion, and at times derision, within the Christian church? Some say that satan has attacked the gift of speaking in tongues because it is a powerful tool whereby the believer is edified and built up in faith.
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the Love of God.” (Jude 1:20)
Nor have entered into the heart of man,
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
“But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no-one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may know the things freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (1Corinthians 2:9-13)
When we find ourselves lacking understanding, talking with our heavenly Father in tongues often brings revelation and insight. The word ‘mysteries’ used in 1Corinthians 14:2 is translated from the Greek word musterion.
Is it any wonder that satan has used confusion and conjecture to deride this wonderful manifestation of the Holy Spirit? Tongues provides a way for us to worship and praise our Father (1Cor. 14:15), declare the wonderful works of God (Acts 2:11), edify and build ourselves up in faith (1 Cor.14:4, Jude 20), and speak sacred secrets with our Father (1Cor. 14:2). In stilting the flow of tongues within the body satan is effectively stilting the flow of edification and revelation God would impart to His people. And would He impart such edification and revelation to all? Yes. Tongues are for everyone within the body of Christ.
However I was one of those fortunate people who found themselves praying in tongues before I knew too much about it. I didn't ask or pray for it, and as a result my rational mind never had the opportunity to attempt to reason it all out and thus get in the way of my 'receiving'. I merely found myself praying in tongues while reading the Psalms out loud one day. However over the years I have seen friends struggle in this area - with tongues seemingly eluding them. To that end I have found Don Basham's book "Spiritual Power: How to Get It, How to Give It" incredibly helpful. In fact it has been so well liked by those I loaned it to that it did finally disappear into the realm of 'lost loaned books' - however many people were blessed by it and able to receive breakthrough in this important area after reading it. You can purchase your own copy by clicking here. Don Basham also authored a book titled "Tongues, Interpretation and Prophecy". I have not personally read this one, but being familiar with his material I have no hesitation in recommending it for further reading on the matter. If you can only afford one, then I recommend "Spiritual Power" as a priority, but "Tongues, Interpretation and Prophecy" will provide valuable additional information.
